The Question I Almost Didn't Ask And How It Changed My Life | Rita Wilson | TEDxNashvilleWomen

So many people never ask themselves what they want. Maybe it's because they think they have everything already, or because they're afraid it's too late. But if we don't ask ourselves what we want, there's no way we'll ever know if our dreams are possible, or what it would take to achieve them. Until recently, that was my story. I was living an amazing, beautiful life, and I didn't feel I deserved to even contemplate anything more. This talk is about why I decided to finally ask myself that question, and what happened when I did. Although Rita Wilson is well-known as an actress and film producer, her most recent projects have all been connected to her passion for music. After achieving her dream in 2012 with the critically acclaimed album AM/FM - an intimate, elegant, and beautifully sung collection of classics from the ‘60s and ‘70s - Wilson has been focusing on a new component of her musical career as a songwriter. Recently, she has collaborated with a number of talented and successful songwriters, composing original material featured on her second album, self-titled Rita Wilson. Her new album Halfway to Home (March 2019) has a fuller sound: Southern California rock meets Nashville country, co-produced by Rita Wilson and Nathan Chapman with additional production from Ron Aniello and John Shanks. Many of the songs were co-written with an A-List group of songwriters, including Grammy winner Liz Rose, Kristian Bush of Sugarland, Mozella, Mitch Allan, and Kara DioGuardi. Author and interviewer Lily Clayton Hansen talks about what she has learned from interviewing well over 1,000-people around the world-that everyone responds to warmth, kindness, and acceptance. In her talk, she references some of her most impactful interviews in her 13-year career and how she has gotten others to open up and be their most authentic selves by being the truest version of herself. This is a talk that will teach others the power of active listening, empathy, and the power of approaching others with a lack of judgment. Lily Clayton Hansen is an author, interviewer, and freelance writer who has written three books, two about the city of Nashville and one to commemorate the 50th anniversary of HCA Healthcare. She began her writing career at age 19 in her hometown of Chicago interviewing celebrities, artists, and small business owners. After Lily moved to her adopted hometown of Nashville, she began her interview series Word of Mouth Conversations in which she interviews real people about how they make a living doing what they love. When Lily isn't interviewing or writing she is passionate about teaching others how to listen, empathize, and have intimate conversations. She believes that face-to-face conversations, in a digital world, are one of the most powerful ways to understand and accept others. In her free time, Lily likes to act in film, commercials, and music videos and draw portraits. From lighter cars to transparent tattoos that can measure your heart rate and ECG, how will our lives be changed by this new species of material in the next 30 years? Dr. Zina Jarrahi Cinker is a condensed matter physicist, international graphene expert and an industrial business strategist. DxVechirniyBlvd ENG: NORWAY DID IT. WILL UKRAINE BE ABLE TO? Daria Hurova-Solheim has lived, studied, and worked in Kryvyi Rih and Lviv, and for the last 2 years in the Norwegian town of Fauske. Studying Norway's past and present, Daria’s found many points that bind Ukraine and this Scandinavian country, as well as the parallels that are evident in the histories of these countries. Yet, Norway has managed to turn from a poor agrarian country with a harsh climate into one of the most successful countries in the world. What can we learn from the Norwegians so that Ukraine can take a similar path? Learn more from Daria on #TEDxVechirniyBlvd. Daria was born in Kryvyi Rih. Tall tales are essential to Artistic disciplines, from exploring deep personal emotion to depicting immerse universes using creative mediums. In an industry incredibly hard to break into for anyone, but especially for those facing discrimination, The Arts are nonetheless Vital, and each of these women have contributed greatly to the Artistic landscape of our history, providing escapism and expression in times if darkness. How can curiosity enhance our ability and drive to learn? In this talk, Brandon Emerick, a cognitive science student at the University of Connecticut, shares his research and personal journey into understanding the psychology behind curiosity, leaving us with ways we can all become life-long learners by improving our curiosity about the world around us. I am a Cognitive Science major at UConn, fascinated by how the mind works from multiple perspectives. It is extremely fun researching information about the brain, behavior, cognition, and emotion on Google Scholar. It is not only intrinsically fascinating, but also quite useful. Since Cognitive Science sweeps through neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and anthropology, I am able to see education, relationships, business, health, and the self through a scholarly perspective. Rather than waiting until college is over to get a job, I founded my sole proprietor business Brain Spawners. To “brain spawn” (verb) means to create something using principles from Cognitive Science. Right now, I am working on a blog about productivity/motivation, mental health, learning, and more. After I graduate from UConn, I intend to get a PhD in Cognitive Science and do research in fields such as Autism, Self Determination Theory, and Artificial Intelligence. I really enjoy talking about my interests with other people and I believe that public speaking and debate are great ways of sharing and processing the newest insights. I am also interested in political satire, educational videos, hiking, health, and fine dining. Here’s a riddle: what’s the thing we do every day and can’;t live without? The answer is pretty simple; telling stories. Whenever we are sad, angry, happy or emotional... there’s a story that lies behind it. It doesn’t have to be cinematic or dramatic; all it takes is to be about you. Soha is storyteller and performer who took on her shoulders the quest to observe and experience the deeper roots of storytelling and help people view their true selves through it. Soha is an Arabic teacher for preschool students, a graduate from the faculty of arts and formerly worked as an editor in a TV channel. She is also the founder of Hadotti and Pianola initiatives where she aims to spread the concept of storytelling throughout the society regardless of age, gender or any stereotype. Soha S. Abd Elqader graduated from the Faculty of Arts and found her true passion while working with children. She realised that our lives are simply stories worth telling, that’s why she created her own project: “حدوتي ”, to bring our kids to the wonderful world of the Arabic language. Soha knows her story is far from finished, but she won’t stop until she fills all the pages of her life. Aysha Upchruch believes that D.O.P.E. is a verb -- dismantling oppression and pushing education requires active, border-crushing action. In this talk, Aysha Upchurch breaks down how the narrative around moving and dancing bodies can be reclaimed and rewritten, unlocking opportunities for deeper learning and engagement in classrooms and bodies of all types. Aysha Upchurch, the Dancing Diplomat, is a seed planter and soil agitator who creates, facilitates, and designs for radical change. This translates to her working as a sought after performer, instructor and education consultant whose work sits at the nexus of youth advocacy, social justice, and transformative education. In 2007, she was commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing arts to create Am I On?, and award-winning, evening-length Hip Hop work that explored the space between youth and adult voices, standardized testing, and school shootings. Step by step, change by change what real resilience is and how to get it into your life. Colleen’s life has thrown at her some significant adversity. As a result, she developed survival techniques that enabled her to be successful, to tick the box of doing a ‘good job’, to be a powerful, confident woman in the business world. She used these techniques to sustain a career and business working in the field of people transformation for over 15 years, with experience in a diverse set of industries from retail to utilities, service organisations and the financial industry. Over the last five years Colleen has witnessed the 'rise of resilience' when it comes to people development, both in terms of organisations asking for it and it being what people need. Resilience being one of the current fashions, she has found her clients asking ‘How can we build resilience?’ ‘How can we overcome adversity and come out stronger, wiser and more capable of handling the 'grit'? From schools to the boardroom everyone was searching for 'the answer'. So she developed a formula based on her own survival techniques - 'Fortitude'. She was determined to change the world with what she knew, one person at a time. However, when more trauma happened in her own life, her formula failed her. She found herself lost of all strength to overcome adversity. It was in this time of healing and recovery that she found the ‘real’ fortitude formula - what real resilience is. Too often people who want to help others end up becoming “do-gooders” - folks who alienate or patronize those they’d like to help. But through introspection and understanding, we can avoid those traps and become more likely to do good instead of being “do-gooders.” Stephanie Jass has a PhD in History and over 25 years of classroom experience teaching American History and gender studies. She has worked as a teen counselor for over 20 years at Camp Arcadia in Arcadia, Michigan, and has served on the boards of two different non-profit organizations. Dr. Jass attends First Presbyterian Church in Tecumseh, Michigan, where she serves as the Elder for Education on the church Session. She is currently working with Issue Box Theatre in Toledo, Ohio to help marginalized people reclaim their voices and rewrite their stories. In her spare time, she sings with two other women in the vocal trio Ear Candy. You may recognize her from her previous appearances on the TV show Jeopardy! in 2012, 2013, and 2014. You've probably needed society's validation before - and so does everyone, whether they are adults or teenagers. However why is that so? We've almost all struggled with defining ourselves because on what basis do we decide who we are? What exactly is identity? "And am I who I think I am?" As youth, our identity always troubles us. Good thing we have Nour Wadie to help us set our minds on the right path and figure out who we are. Nour is a physiotherapy student who believes that she's a comforter. But why exactly does she think so? And did she have a hard time realizing that or knowing who she is? Have you ever just paused and thought about everything going on around you? What might be going on in that stranger's life? What are their struggles? Whilst you're pondering, there is a child playing in the sand, a woman giving birth, an old man dying. Sonder is the word for it; where each stranger has a story as complex as your own. If you've ever asked yourself these existential questions, then you probably have even more. And where do these questions end? Do we ever get their answers? Are we even meant to get them? Andrew Samy is passionate about philosophy and about the philosophical interactions between humans and our connection to nature and everything around us. He believes that Philosophy saved his life. Thus, he's forever grateful. One thing is: he still didn't get an answer to most of his questions, and this is the real thrill! Have you ever just paused and thought about everything going on around you? What might be going on in that stranger's life? Whilst you're pondering, there is a child playing in the sand, a woman giving birth, an old man dying. Sonder is the word for it; where each stranger has a story as complex as your own. The small space between success and failure. I will share a personal story that examines how each life experience is a link, woven together through failures and successes. I will share the insight I gained from a major injury in my athletic career. How injury helped me to accept my current circumstances, learn I wasn't defined by my current condition and the true meaning of agility. What I hope others will get out of my talk is the will to reinvent themselves. You can be successful if you are open to a new perspective on success, because it may not look like how you originally imagined. You can push through and play injured. Alicia Wade is a mom and wife that happens to have a passion for people using their brains, being self-aware and accountable for the energy they project. Imagine a world where everyone saw themselves and others as a whole and fully capable? That was her inspiration for creating The HR Source, a consulting firm in 2015. Her passion for effective teams was birthed during her childhood on sports teams. Alicia was blessed to be on winning teams enjoying District, Regional, State, Conference, and NCAA All-American honors. Alicia feels her curiosity for organizational behaviors and team efficiency began in college. She earned two degrees from the University of Oklahoma, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and one in Communication. She obtained her MBA from Baldwin Wallace College (now University). Alicia has over 15 years of management experience with Fortune 100 companies. She has lead teams across 21 states, over 500 direct reports and a portfolio of over $150 million. This world is filled with such chaos, and sadly, my life has certainly had it's share of chaotic experiences. By the time I was 19 I had already lived a lifetime of trauma, from Domestic Violence, Physical and Emotional Abuse, witnessing my own mom's murder and technically becoming an orphan at age 11. I knew there had to be more to my pain. Deep within, I knew my traumatic experiences would, one day be used to help others heal. As a result of so much trauma, my friends and family tell me I'm strong. It took many years to look at the strength they so admired, as a gift. I learned early on that if I was going to help someone else, I had to first, address my own pain. I began my endeavor of healing through my home away from college visits to my cousin's house. Her home offered acceptance, love, peace and joy. Peace felt really good, so I pursued peace as if my life depended upon it. In many ways it did - my personal world held more chaos than any of my peers. After many years in my pursuit of peace in the midst of my many storms, I happened upon a traditional Japanese artform called, Wabi Sabi. "Wabi-sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. It's a way of living that focuses on finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting peacefully the natural cycle of growth and decay [joy and pain, strength and weakness.]" My talk will be one of my most intimate and vulnerable, yet greatest gifts to the world of chaos. I'm calling it, Toxic Strength. Toxic Strength looks at the traumatic experiences I've faced. This may sound crazy, but I've learned to partner with my pain in order to heal, and find peace within. With the amount of toxicity that has been poured into my pysche, I should be broken, lost, angry and ready to give up on life all together. But, I'm quite the opposite. Instead, I continue to gather all my broken pieces and lovingly glue them back together again. This beautifully broken catastrophe is my life, or, what I affectionately call my uniquely and perfectly designed masterpiece. In my talk about Toxic Strength, I will share how I have learned to navigate the murky waters of my many traumatic experiences to create radical hope through my expression own of Wabi Sabi. No stranger to tragedy and loss, Rev. Tammie Denyse has been navigating trauma, tragedy and loss both personally and professionally for more than 40 years. She uses intersections of faith, education and her lived experiences to create a heart-centered approach to healing and wellness. Rev. She is a 15-year breast cancer survivor and has spent the past 13 years coaching cancer patients and their families through the trauma of a cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. She is recognized as an expert in the field of breast cancer and black women and is the Co-Principle Investigator for Project SOAR (Speaking Our African American Realities) in partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Project SOAR examines the unique experiences African American women face who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Rev. Tammie’s work has been recognized locally, nationally and globally for its innovative approaches to breast cancer survivorship and overall wellness. Rev. Tammie earned her degree in Human and Community Services from St. Mary’s College, Moraga, CA. Tammie received her cancer coaching certification from The Cancer Journey Coach Training. She is the mother of three adult children and the grandmother of one. Rev. The Naked Truth of Desire: Beyond Gender | Saida Desilet | TEDxLSCTomball
The Naked Truth of Desire: Beyond Gender | Saida Desilet | TEDxLSCTomball

Desire is a word that has been vilified, misinterpreted and misunderstood. When Desire is harnessed correctly, its energy becomes the source and direction of human evolution, everywhere and through time. We all feel desire, which we may call yearning or passion. How we use it is up to us. Desire is beyond sexuality or sensuality. It is a visceral sensation of wanting something due to an incredible force of nature or calling, that when recognized and directed in healthy ways can lead us to our truest heart’s calling. Desire is a force beyond the function of man or woman, or actually any gender at all. Desire’s fire is beyond societal or cultural differences: Desire is universal. When we dare enough to trust the strength and authenticity of the desire we all feel, we can catapult ourselves into an optimal state of living that is full and alive, not wrapped within the arms of the societal disease called apathy we’ve come to regard as normal. As today’s women are facing their sexual sovereignty and challenging men’s masculinity, it’s time for all of us to take responsibility for our desire, and not just sexually. When we can embrace that desire is a human condition that fuels all areas of our lives, we can begin to dissolve the borders that exist inside of ourselves, and in our world. Then, authentic global healing can finally occur. Dr. Saida Désilets is an author and thought-leader in women’s psycho-sexual health and the founder of the Désilets Method. She facilitates transformational workshops around the globe, empowering women of all backgrounds and ages to come home to themselves and live in right relationship with their sensual/sexual nature. Saida’s gift is in shifting cognitive paradigms while assisting women in repatterining cellular memory, especially in their vagina and pelvic floor, resulting in greater sexual wellbeing, sexual function and sexual satisfaction. Saida Désilets, Ph.D is a transpersonal psychologist certified by the International University of Professional Studies. She is also certified in Qi Gong, the Five Elements Theory of Chinese Medicine, and Ayurvedic Medicine through The Universal Tao School and Dr. Light Miller’s Ayurvedic School. Since 2001, Saida has been facilitating leading-edge workshops on the topic of the Jade Egg practice brought into modern-day use to suit the needs of each individual woman. Her work was recognized by the founder of the Universal Tao, Mantak Chia, and she was invited to share her philosophy and her uniquely designed Jade Egg practices at his training center in Thailand. This is where, in 2003, Saida met Dr. Rachel Abrams and contributed to her book, The Multi-Orgasmic Woman. In 2006, Dr. Désilets published her first book, Emergence of the Sensual Woman and was approached by Dr. Christiane Northrup to contribute to the revised edition of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom, and again in 2008, asked for Saida’s contribution to her book The Secret Pleasures of Menopause. In 2011, Dr. Saida contributed to the European Transpersonal Psychology anthology: Different Views on Human Sexuality and Intimate Relationships from an Integral and Transpersonal Perspective. In 2018, her second book, Desire, was published as well as contributing to Dr. Abrams newest book, BodyWise. She has been featured on many panels, including two Ecstatic Birth panels along with Dr. Northrup, Ina Gaskin, and other incredible birth professionals. Saida is constantly interviewed and consulted for articles, books and research on the impact of particular practices on the sexual wellbeing of women. Dr. Désilets’ method incorporates somatic movement, meditation, self-inquiry, journaling, and specific tried-and-true Jade Egg practices that invite all women into their birthright of sexual sovereignty. This mind-body method has been refined over 18 years and has been endorsed by physicians, pelvic physiotherapists, and psychologists from around the world. Heart-centered, sexual sovereignty is at the core of this method, reintegrating women’s sensuality and sexuality into it’s natural expression and vitality. The pursuit of purpose and the realization of the life you dream of. Each of us has an amazing purpose which we are destined to achieve if we can just open ourselves to the idea that such a purpose exists. This divine purpose is more than we can see in ourselves. It is only by opening ourselves up to the idea that this purpose exist that God/the Divine/the Universe begins to work within our lives in such a way that we can not only determine what the purpose is but also begin to work toward achieving it. When you encounter this purpose you will have no idea how to make it happen. Having faith in something bigger than yourself will bring about the “how” to achieve your dreams. Patrick Slaughter would say that he is living proof that God has a sense of humor. In 1991, after finding himself down on his luck and homeless in Chicago, Patrick turned to performing magic shows on the streets for tips. With a tireless work ethic and his addiction to this thing called food, Patrick honed his skills to the point that he was able to come in out of the cold-literally…he was able to rent an apartment! Patrick’s magic career eventually took off and allowed him to perform at various events and venues around the world. Patrick has been a featured performer for Club Med, BF Goodrich, Clear Channel Entertainment, Busch Gardens, and Aflac. Somewhere along the way Patrick attempted semi-retirement. It was the worst two years of his life. To help ease the boredom, he enrolled in law school. Four years later he graduated summa cum laude with a law degree, eventually passed the Tennessee bar exam, and had no idea what he was going to do next. Somehow, through luck and happenstance, Patrick met Jim LaFevor, who taught Patrick the ins and outs of Divorce and Family law practice in Tennessee. Patrick also took an interest in immigration law and developed a family immigration practice on his own. A year later Patrick and Jim formed the LaFevor & Slaughter law firm in Knoxville, Tennessee. A year after that Mr. LaFevor suddenly had to retire due to unforeseen medical reasons. Patrick found himself on his own, managing a law firm. Patrick has a reputation for being kind but relentless when advocating for his clients. Patrick was selected to be a “Super Lawyer” and also designated as a “rising star,” by the prestigious Thompson Reuters Super Lawyer organization. (An award bestowed on less than 2% of Tennessee Lawyers). Additionally Patrick and his firm have received awards from the American Institute of Legal Counsel for client satisfaction in the areas of Family law and Immigration law for the past several years running. Five years later with gross revenues around $1M, Patrick is starting to focus on what is next. Currently, Patrick is assisting other lawyers develop their own practices. Patrick has written a number of articles for the Knoxville Bar Association’s Dicta on developing a paperless practice and working remotely. Patrick has also delivered legal education presentations on such diverse topics the impact of criminal please on immigration status for the Knoxville Bar Association; An Introduction to Immigration law for the Smoky Mountain Paralegal Association; and UIFSA and Complex Child Support Issues for the National Business Institute. Patrick will also be teaching business operations principles at Law Firm Auto Pilot’s Total Transformation Workshop in New Orleans in August. So why does Patrick find all of the above so funny? He will be the first to tell you that if you would have told him 10 years ago he was going to be a lawyer, he would have laughed at you! How do we explain the extraordinary? When we think of the amazing opportunities that seem to just fall in our laps as if handpicked from heaven for us, how do we see them? Perhaps a more important question is, what do we do with them? Recently, I experienced an extraordinary set of events that led to me fulfilling the exact vision of a long lost family member(whom I never met), coincidence? Whatever the case may be, It was an opportunity unlike any I had ever dreamed of having; to speak to the members of the United Nations in the GA Hall. Needless to say, I seized that providential day with both hands thus allowing my own destiny to intersect in an extraordinary way with the work my late great-grandfather was involved in as a tribal council leader before his death in 1927, fulfilling his mission to bring the tribal council's concerns before the international community. Noelle wants to see a world where people of every tribe and nation work together to build peaceful institutions. As a full time honor’s student and homeschooling mom, she’s been everywhere from Cub Scout meetings and day-long track and field meets to Intercollegiate conferences and the United Nations General Assembly Hall as a speaker during the Model UN. There's No Hack to Overcommitting | Kimberly Wilson | TEDxLSCTomball

Over-committing is almost an epidemic. Those who don’t over-commit may not understand the severity, but those who have experienced it know exactly what that means. Most people don’t even realize they’re over-committed until it’s too late. Once meetings start overlapping and you’re having to leave one early just to arrive at another late is when you realize that maybe it’s time to stop. Except, it's not that easy. For people who catch the over-committed disease it’s not easy to cancel projects and say no to other meetings. We create one reason or another as to why we need to keep going, to keep doing what we’re doing. Whether it’s for the incredible experience it can bring us or for the help it can bring others. However, this ends up hurting us more than it helps us. Kimberly Wilson is a Terry Transfer Scholar at the University of Houston. While at the University of Houston Bauer Honors College of Business she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in entrepreneurship with a minor in interpersonal communications. Prior to the University of Houston, she was a Chancellor's Fellow of the Lone Star College-Tomball Honors College. She was the President of the Student Government Association, the Honors College Student Organization, the Gay-Straight Alliance, and Vice-President of Scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa's Alpha Rho Mu chapter. She was also competitively selected to serve as a National Model United Nations delegate to represent the Lone Star College-Tomball campus for the past two years. After receiving scholarships to study abroad in Taiwan and China with Lone Star, Kimberly also plans to study abroad in the spring semester to better develop her education at UH. Through all of her adventures, she describes that she has developed leadership skills she never thought possible through her involvement on and off campus. "Leadership isn't something handed to you. It's developed through much trial and error over time, but the struggle is worth it," and she aims to instill this philosophy in all of her peers. With the spread of the internet, information is easier to access. However we tend to be busy individuals and that limits the amount of time we have to get accurate information. Most, because of political affiliations and polarization, only follow one news source. However, this topic is above politics, it has more to do with fact and the truth. The marketplace of ideas says that in a pool of information, the truth will prevail even if it is surrounded by false information. The only stipulation is that we have to be actively seeking the truth. If we are just consuming information from one echo chamber we will never find the real truth. Opposing viewpoints should not be disregarded as they could provide us a perspective that leads us to the truth. This topic challenges individuals to seek the truth so that we can create a better informed society that can come together and solve issues. Hugo attended Waller High School and competed in the Debate team. While in speech and debate, he traveled to Stanford and Harvard Universities. The Generational Impact of Cancer: BRCA2 Positive | Ashley Dedmon | TEDxLSCTomball
The Generational Impact of Cancer: BRCA2 Positive | Ashley Dedmon | TEDxLSCTomball
Před 3 dny
As a young woman, I lost my mother to breast cancer and watched my father battle prostate cancer. With a family history that includes three generations of women affected by breast cancer, I decided to undergo genetic testing and discovered I was BRCA 2 positive, a leading marker for the disease. I believed I was next. I was scared. I had questions, and I needed answers. After undergoing extensive cancer monitoring for a decade with my high-risk oncologist, I sought out a team of doctors to discuss other options. Together, we developed a plan to prevent a possible occurrence of cancer - a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy, which was successfully performed in December 2016. Life after surgery has had its challenges and has been a humbling experience. The physical journey for me was not bad, but the recovery took time. I had to be patient and trust the healing process. I had to be patient with myself and build my stamina and strength. My mind would tell me I could GO, GO, GO, but my body said NO, NO, NO! I had to learn to listen to my body and my doctors, so I could recover safely and properly. There were times I felt so helpless, trying to help my two-year-old understand why I couldn’t hold her, pick her up or take her to school and ballet class. Each day it gets better, and eventually, you discover your new normal. I attribute my quick recovery to living an active and healthy lifestyle. I was not ready for the emotional journey. There were moments I felt less than a woman because I felt my breasts defined me. I learned to remind myself that my mind, character, and strength, define my womanhood. I have learned to embrace my scars because they tell my story...and that is, I have been “gracefully broken” and rebuilt with strength. On this journey, I have encountered many physical, mental, and emotional obstacles and challenges, but along the way, I have discovered my strength and purpose, and all glory goes to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Three years later, I feel empowered, more confident, and I know that this decision didn’t define me, it refined me. TALK In my talk, I will discuss my family history of cancer, my experience as a young caregiver, which led me to genetic testing and the impact it had (has) in my life. I will share my most vulnerable thoughts after losing my mother, hearing of my father’s diagnosis, and finding out I was BRCA2 +. I will share my 10 years of aggressive monitoring and what led me to have a Preventive Double Mastectomy, and the emotional and mental impact it had on me (my womanhood, motherhood, my self-confidence, inability to breastfeed, intimacy, etc.) Finally, I will discuss how I overcame my parent's diagnosis, navigating through my own journey, and how I have been positioned to Educate, Equip, and Empower others who have been impacted by cancer (fighters, survivors, previvors, caregivers, and supporters). With my long family history of breast cancer, I wanted to use my experience to write a children’s book, with the goal of helping youth understand the disease and its impact on the women in their lives. My book titled “The Big Discovery” is an educational tool that helps families, especially children, navigate the difficult journey that breast cancer presents. I was inspired to write this after my journey as a young child with two parents with cancer and my own journey as a BRCA2 previvor, and mom. The book’s foreword was written by board-certified breast surgeon, Sandra Templeton, M.D., of Houston Methodist Breast Surgery Partners. Ashley is a proud BRCA2 previvor and was a teen caregiver of two parents with cancer. During her journey, she authored “The Big Discovery.” A children’s book that facilitates and guides families through a breast cancer diagnosis. Ashley and her journey have been featured in Voyage Houston Magazine, Women’s Health Magazine as well as several other magazines, blogs, and newspapers. In addition, she has appeared on FOX 26, RADIO ONE, Facebook Live, and podcast. Her speaking experience consists of a keynote speaker, guest speaker, panelist, emcee, and moderator. Thx for the talk, sir. Tho it looks to me like a man becoming woke instead of wise. Emotional abuse, criticism. Sure if someone is going after you, it's hard to tell when it's harassment and when it's a demand for improvement. Considering that it was a woman, sounds like u should have studied up on hypergamy and a woman's natural instincts. But in the end steel sharpens steel. Relationship requires sacrifice. And ego is a two-edged sword. Instead of realizing the need for personal improvement in the outer world you've only developed a software improvement for the inner world. There's kinda sorta something wrong with me but really it's the other person. Still I could be wrong, we are only human after all.

I do agree with her point about technology being made to benefit the people who are already good at something. Technology makes it easier to connect with so many more people, but if you are the type of person that gets rejected for being different then it creates a situation where more people reject you. Then people bring up how kids need to go outside and play. I grew up before social media and back then I didn't go outside, because I got picked on, had no friends and sucked at sports. I wasn't the only person like that, but my mother constantly forced me to go outside because it was something I "needed" and all it did was make me feel worse and make me hate myself more because no matter how much I tried I couldn't get strong enough to play with the other kids and I couldn't be cool enough for anyone to like me. Technology doesn't create problems; it just makes them more apparent.
